Appendix 1 (to Trinity...)

Who else 'got away with it?'

Who else was part of the environmental and human abuses of the Cold War and got away with it?   A staggering number of former and present government scientists, bureaucrats, spokespersons, and high-ranking officials got away with telling us that 'fallout' and 'terminated' unexploded bombs1 posed no danger to us.  Top medical experts got away with remaining tight-lipped about what they know is the root cause of our global cancer epidemic - fallout.  The jurists and parliamentarians in the highest courts and legislatures got away with barring civilians from suing the government for radiation injuries, citing 'sovereign immunity.'  All of these entrusted civil servants caught a glimpse into a future when people would learn that their radiation exposures caused their illnesses and their lawsuits would bankrupt the treasuries of companies, organizations and entire republics.  The only way to 'survive' was criminally.   In the days, months and years after thousands of these so-called esteemed, educated, and expert professionals and leaders failed to prevent the wide-spread - and continuing - environmental contamination, thousands of more persons who found out bits and pieces of the truth allowed the crimes to continue by failing to ask questions, to press for justice, to enact change, and to fight to impeach corrupt and lying leaders.

But it didn't stop there.  Millions and millions of persons across the globe who had freedoms and the opportunities to act to better the world thought that they didn't need to act.  They came to think that the world is big enough that one extra person not doing the right thing will not matter.  They thought that someone else would rise up.  They felt that with the time and effort they dedicate to raise good children, follow the law, adhere to the teachings of religion, and help charitable causes, that was 'all they can do.'  They didn't care enough to rise up and vote out their leaders whenever they lied, boot out medical experts whenever they skewed findings, impeach their supreme court justices whenever they judged unconstitutionally, censor their parliamentarians whenever they passed unlawful laws, or boycott news agencies that censored the truth.

When ordinary citizens succumb to excuses, loyalties, greed, cowardice or laziness to not hold accountable their countrymen and women and government employees when they commit malfeasance, perjury, sabotage, fraud or murder, then clandestine versions of these things - cover ups - easily slither through the holes and cracks and go unchecked, unstopped and unpunished.

In this Swiss-cheese style of self-governance, a coverup that led to billions of persons across the globe who are suffering or are doomed to suffer from the cancer-causing effects of fallout-originated radiobiological poisons managed to glide right through. And, yet, we regard 'democracy' and our 'civilized society' with pride, honor and patriotism?

Both we and the atomic scientists knew we could get away with not caring, and got away with it. But we really got away with nothing. The scientists, their families and all of our families were bit and got the poison.

In a society where no one cares very deeply about anything, anything can and does happen, even the bad stuff. We all got away with not caring so deeply about the world and the end result was that the world ended up not caring so deeply about us.

We are all guity of omnicide. We all have blood on our hands. And if that is not enough to make us learn our lesson, to see the error of our ways, to realize that citizenship and stewardship are the inescapable duties of the global man and woman, then we have sealed our fate. The deformations of gene pools across biological organisms will spell the end of life. The longer it takes for us to see this truth, the less sand will remain in the hourglass.

1 At the Nevada Test Site, where over 1,000 bombs were detonated beginning in 1951, at least two nuclear devices fully failed to detonate.  One 1975 device was damaged during 'emplacement' and another, in May 1978, dubbed 'Transom,' was a dud.  About 16 months after the Transom attempt, the Department of Energy, on September 6, 1979, exploded a 140-kiloton underground nuclear device intended to create a shock environment to 'destroy' both failed bomb devices.  (It took another smaller nuclear blast in late 1979 to 'destroy' the 1975 device.)  The DOE subsequently claimed that the bomb devices were 'terminated,' meaning they were no longer able to detonate. But the DOE was lying a second time. The DOE first announced to the Associated Press in 1978 that there was 'no possibility of any additional explosion' after Transom failed to detonate. The media and public must have been confused when over a year later the DOE said they needed a 140-kiloton underground bomb to 'terminate' Transom. They already said it wouldn't explode. How are we to trust the DOE that the 'termination' efforts succeeded? How are we to know that - at any moment - test site tourists and Las Vegas residents won't experience the awakening of a sleeping 30-year lie in the form of an artificial shockwave and earthquake?!

- Forgotten Guinea Pigs Report, 1980

Tips for arguing with radiation PR people
When they belittle your claims... by comparing any exposure from their facilities to... You say or ask...
...about your exposure to fallout from nuke plants or weapons testing fallout... ....background radiation... 'Background radiation doesn't mean it is harmless - it probably does cause a small portion of cancers.  If you are adding to the background radiation, you are adding to someone's risk.'

'How many more defective children will be born and how many cancers will be induced by this increase in 'background radiation'?

...about your exposure to fallout from nuke plants or weapons testing fallout... ...flying in a airplane... 'That is not a realistic comparison.  Radionuclides in fallout are incorporated into our bodies (tissue, bones).  Most of the radiation from cosmic rays is external.'
...about your exposure to fallout from nuke plants or weapons testing fallout... ... a chest x-ray... 'You don't ingest or inhale the radiation source from x-rays.  An x-ray lasts for a millisecond.  Fallout lingers in body tissue and bones for decades .'
...about your exposure to fallout from nuke plants or weapons testing fallout... ...eating a banana 'Potassium-40 is a naturally occurring radioisotope that has been present in foods and the environment on Earth for billions of years.  Potassium 40, which at normal body levels delivers an annual internal dose to the soft tissue of 20 millirem and 5 millirem to the bone, is not as hazardous as many forms of anthropogenic (meaning: artificial; manmade) radiation for several reasons.  One main reason is, unlike many types of manmade fission products, its environmental levels rarely peak to hundreds or thousands of times normal levels. Since 1945, we've seen a cycle of drastic rising and falling of levels of environmental anthropogenic radiation with nuclear accidents, non-accident releases, radioactivity blowing around, etc...  Another reason: some forms of anthropogenic radiation in the body do much more damage than potassium-40 for the same quantity of radiation. Dose tables printed in a 1970s document (NUREG 1.109 rev. 1 Oct. '77) by the NRC paint a spooky, yet realistic, picture for what happens to a radiation sensitive organ, the thyroid, when iodine-131 is consumed. A NRC formula indicates that 1,000 picocuries of iodine-131 gives a dose of 80 millirems to the adult thyroid and 140 millirems to the thyroid of an infant. Consider: one liter of 'Sunrise Dairy' (Kansas) milk in April 2011 had 1,518 pCi/L of Iodine-131. That was from Fukushima.
...about your exposure to fallout from nuke plants or weapons testing fallout... ...standing next to a smoke alarm.... 'You don't ingest or inhale the Americium-241 from smoke alarms.  You're talking about the small gamma component of Am-241.  That's external exposure.'
